For building engineers, building green usually means finding ways to save energy and water through the electrical and mechanical systems, says Keith Pehl, president of Optima Engineering.
Engineers must get up to speed on a variety of systems, including ones that many owners still consider cost-prohibitive such as photovoltaic cells that convert sunlight into electricity, he says. Appalachian State University provides a number of one- and two-day courses on green-building topics, he says.
